Travel to New Zealand: visas, NZeTA, and key deadlines
If you are travelling from overseas to attend the ANZEA Conference 2026 in Ōtautahi Christchurch (3–5 August 2026), please check your immigration requirements well before you book flights. Most delegates will need either a visa or a New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority (NZeTA) to board their flight to Aotearoa New Zealand.
We strongly encourage anyone who requires a visa to submit their application as soon as possible. Immigration New Zealand cannot guarantee that applications submitted close to departure will be decided in time.
Key deadlines
-
ANZEA Conference 2026 dates: 3–5 August 2026, Ōtautahi Christchurch, Aotearoa New Zealand.
-
Recommended latest date to submit visa applications: 6 July 2026 (at least 4 weeks before the event start date).
-
Recommended latest time to request an NZeTA: at least 72 hours before you travel.
Current processing times are published on the Immigration New Zealand website and may change, so please check regularly: immigration.govt.nz.
Do I need a visa or an NZeTA?
Your requirements depend on:
-
The passport you will travel on
-
Your length of stay in New Zealand
-
The purpose of your visit (for most delegates, this will be “attending an event as a visitor”).
Most ANZEA 2026 delegates will fall into one of these groups.
1. Delegates who require a visa
You must apply for a visa before travelling if:
-
You hold a passport from a country that is not on the visa waiver list, or
-
You intend to stay in New Zealand for more than three months.
For the ANZEA 2026 conference, visas are required for attendees travelling on passports from:
-
Fiji
-
Samoa
-
Tonga
-
Solomon Islands
-
Trinidad and Tobago
- and more (please check your requirements on the immigration website)
Most attendees in this group will apply for a Visitor Visa – General.
2. Delegates who can request an NZeTA (visa waiver)
If you hold a passport from a visa waiver country or territory, and you are visiting for three months or less, you can generally travel to New Zealand on an NZeTA and may be granted a visitor visa on arrival, subject to meeting standard entry requirements.
-
Australian and U.S. citizens travelling on Australian or U.S. passports do not need a visa to visit New Zealand, but must request an NZeTA before travelling.
-
Many other countries (such as the United Kingdom, Canada, most European Union countries, Japan, Singapore, and others) are also visa waiver countries; a full list is available on the Immigration New Zealand website.
You should request your NZeTA online or via the official app at least 72 hours before departing for New Zealand.
What you may need for your application
Depending on the visa type, Immigration New Zealand may ask for:
-
A valid passport (with at least three months’ validity beyond your intended departure from New Zealand, or one month if your passport is from a country with a New Zealand mission that can issue it)
-
An acceptable passport photo
-
Proof of registration from ANZEA confirming the conference details and your participation
-
Evidence of sufficient funds or sponsorship
-
Evidence of onward travel (if not sponsored)
-
Evidence that you are a genuine visitor intending a temporary stay
-
Additional documents if you are applying for a Specific Purpose Work Visa or Tour Escort Visitor Visa.
Before you fly
Before you depart for ANZEA 2026, make sure that you have:
-
Your visa approval or NZeTA approval
-
A printed copy of any eVisa granted
-
A passport that meets New Zealand’s validity requirements
-
Completed the New Zealand Traveller Declaration (NZTD) online or via the mobile app, up to 24 hours before you travel (or are prepared to complete a paper declaration on arrival if needed).
